GOVERNMENT SUGAR SCHEME.
COMPANY DISTRIBUTING AGENT. ' NO NOTICEABLE CHANGE.. An idea has gained currency among a number of people that the Government have purchased the Sugar Company’s plant, and on July 1 will practically enter the sugar trade as manufacturers and purveyors. Thi s notion is an erroneous one. The distribution of sugar after the first of next month will, to all intent and purposes, be the same as a{ present. The Government have bought the sugar crop, but have not taken over {he Sugar Company’s plant, and the company will continue to turn out the manufactured sugar for New Zealand, as in the past, but instead of acting as a principal it will be in the position of an agent, both for the manufacture and the distribution of the sugar. Early next week, the chairman of the Board of Trade, Mr W. G. Meexpected to arrive in Auckland for the purpose of concluding all details connected with the new sugar distribution scheme, and also to carry out various necessary business arrangements. In point of fact the distribution of sugar in Auckland has “been well organised for some months past, and to a less degree in the South, also. As soon as time permits further organisation in the South to bring that part of the Dominion into line with the Auckland system. Although the company is the distributing agent under the new scheme it will, of course, be under the supervision and control of the Board of Trade. —Auckland Star.
