REWARD FOR PATRIOTISM.
(To tlie Editor.) For sometime past it has been noticed that there has been effort on the part of certain vile persons to cause disunion in the Empire by their remarks. Now the nature of those remarks are misguidedly in the direction of what they term independence of action in trade —to wit, selling butter, mutton, wool and other trumpery commodites. What are these people wishing to bring about? So far as the poor, innocent and trusting dovelike farmers are conceded it is nothing more than a flagrant and rebellious attempt to cause strife with our mothers and fathers in Britain. . They,- in the most beneficent, singlehearted, paternal-like manner take this miserable stuff of ours, which we have the effrontery to call our staple products, and therby keep New Zea-
land farmers from starving. What is it to them if those kindly fathers, in what we call the Motherland, sell this stuff out to the hateful German, the slick Yank, or the Frenchman, for many times over what they pay for it What is it to them if Denmark, Germany, Argentine, or in fact any country can sell in the Holy Motherland at double or treble what New Zealand producers are paid for it? Does nr f the commandeer, the hall-mark of patriotism settle all .this? We have had a visit from the Prince and that should be a salve for a commandeer for at least a generation. It is true a place called the United Staes quarrelled with their Mother about Tea, anjl set up business on their own, but we of the obedient, gentle, dovelike and patriotic brand are too gocd to do anything of that kind, as some cynics have said of the good young man who died. —We are etc., TWO PATRIOTS.
