A CALL FOR ASSISTANCE.
SCHOONER IN DISTRESS. WELLINGTON. This day. Last night Captain Yeo, naval intelligence officer at Wellington, received a call for help by repeated wireless messages from the new fivemasted schooner Vigilant, 1439 tons, bound from Gray's harbour, Washingion, to Sydney. The schooner reported she was in heavy weather, and as her deck cargo was shitting, she may need assistance. The Vigilant gave her position at 8.30 yesternight as 150 miles north-west of Lord Howe Island, which lie s to the north-east of Sydney, in longtitude about two-thirds of the distance along the course from Cape Maria to Sydney. Captain Yeo promptly cabled a message from the Vigilant to Sydney naval atuhorities. Probably, however, the message has already been picked up by the New South Wales wireles s stations. The Vigilant was firs t spoken yestereve by a vessel which was about two hundred miles north of her, but both ves-
sels were moving away from each
other .The Vigilant left Gray's Harbour on eleventh April, with a cargo of timber for Sydney. She is American, owned.
