TAIHAPE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING The usual monthly meeting of th*Chamber of Oonitnevce was held last night. Present: Messrs Davjes, McLaughlan, Lawson, and Cun- ! niughame. In the absence cf the PreI sident, Mr Davies was voted to tl-e , chair. Apologies for noil attendance were received from Mei-::;vs AUlridge 1 and Gifford. A communication was received from the Chief Postmaster at Wanganui with regard to the installation of a slot telephone at the local post office, stating that it w r ould be some time before tnTs could be done owing to shortage of material, but the fphone will be installed at the first, opportunity. A reply 'was also received from the authorities that a stamp vending machine had been installed in the private box lobby. It was pointed out by members of the Chamber that the machine only delivered penny stamps, and as the ordinary rate (at present) for commercial purposes was ljd. user s of the machine were penalised id each time they used it. It was decided to request the Department to provide a half-penny stamp vending machine.

The Postmaster at Taihape (Mr W. McNickle) wrote as follows: I have to acknowledge your letter of the 18th instant, in reference to the sale of s tamps. and the improved attendance at the Taihape Post Office. Your expression that the "Counter attendance has improved quite a lot lately." is much appreciated by me, and also by the staff. There is a desire, on the part of the / whole staff, to give every satisfaction J to the public, and to business people I more particularly, and any credit for doing thi s is always very welcome. With respect to the sale 1 of fourpenny j stamps. I am now able to supply these |.so that all denominations are now on sale. A Parcel Delivery Window, for the use of the Private-Box Holders, has been put in at the end of the private-box lobby, a s an experiment, to try to relieve the congestion that | often occurs at the counter immedij ately a mail is 'sorted. This window i will be available for the delivery of J parcels to private-box holders, for ! half an Hour after the notice has been I put that the mail has been sorted, i between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 ! p.m. I Messrg E. Porter and Co., Auckland, j agents for Noble's Explosives Com- . pany, wrote that the Company were ; averse to erecting magazines in differ'ent centres, and suggested that the local governing body should undertake the provision of a magazine for the storage of explosives. Considerable discussion took place on this subject, it being stated that business people in the town who dealt in explosives would be quite willing to contribute £2 or £3 per annum towards a magazine. One member said the position was ! that business people were precluded ! from storing all but a small quantity : of explosives in the borough, and if any was received by farmers for blasting or stumping operations (and these would be more largely used in the near future) it was necessary to send away for the explosives.

It wag decided to write to the Borough Council asking it to reconsider its former decision in this connection.

The question of workers' dwellings, six of which had been promised for Taihape, was brought up for discussion, but as the Borough Council hud moved in the matter no definite action was taken. It was decided that the Chamber should be* represented at Ihe meeting to be called by the Mayor to consider the question of the soldiers' memorial. The matter of holding a reunion of returned men, or a formal welcome home, is to be brought under the notice of His Worshin ::{ the same meeting. It ' is the intention of the Chamber to ' appeal to its members to attend this I meeting. I The necessity of cutting up large cs- | fates in this district for soldier settle- ' ment is to be brought under the notice of the member for" the district, and his assistance in this direction is to be invoked. The question of having a uniform scale of land agents' charges was discussed, and Messrs Davios, Aldridge, and Cuiiningham'e* were appointed a committee to confer with the land agents, and arrange a. scale of charges, which is to be incorporated in the | Chamber's book of rules. The attention of the Bailway Department is to be drawn to the unsuitability of the loading bank at present at the local station, and a request is to be made that it be enlarged so as to make it more convenient for facilitating the loading and unloading of vehicles. Members in arrear s with subscriptions are to be requested to pay up before the annual general meeting in August. The Chamber then adjourned.
