FOOTBALL.

JUNIOR COMPETITIONS. There being no senior match on Saturday, the Recreation Ground was occupied by the junior footballers. Utiku v. Huia; Pirate s v. Mataroa. The ground was in good order and the football was fair. UTIKU V. HUIA. This game, which was looked upon by followers of the game as good thing for Huias. but such as are the fortunes of the game, Utiku, who have improved wonderfully, simply pushed Huias all over the paddock, and piled up the good score of 23 to 3. Mr Wilson had the whistle. PIRATES V. MATAROA. This game proved to be the best to witness from a spectators ’ point of view. Both team s being evenly raatpbed, and a good hard game resulted in Pirates notching 8 points to the country teams 3. Mataroa played a good game and with a bit more practice - and combination will make a better showing. Mr Bennett held the whistle.

INTER-CLUB GAME

TAIHAPE PIRATES 32, v. OLD BOYS 0. The home team took the lield with a considerably weakened team with the absence of Mowat (forward), and Sven sou and Palmer (five-eighths), and they had to reorganise. Old Boys (blue) kicked o,ff, and from the following line-out Strachan, playing half, sent the ball on to Swan, to Scott, who found tlx? line. McAuliffe put his forwards ti- the attack, Rowe getting in a nice line-kick. Old Boys forwards looked dangerous then when Clowie saved cleverly. An exciting piece of play followed, E. Sinclair centring and the visiting backs made another break. R. Collier failing to take his pass. Pirates were looking dangerous when Campion got off’ with a good mark. R. Collier picked the ball up from the feet of Old Boys' forwards, and kicked down the field, Rowe kicking to the line. Strachan was next called upon,, to ease the situation for the home side, but the next few minutes were brimful of excitement. Pirates backs were set in motion and Cowie cutting in nicely passed on, when Old Boys closed up, only to see McAuliffe send out to Dochery on the wing. Campion bringing him to earth with a flying tackle, a free kick to the blues saving the position temporarily. A couple of penalties against Old Boys saw Cowie and R. Collier having ineffectual shots at goal. Good kicking left play in midfield for a while until Cowie kicked along, only to see Old Boys’ forwards carry the ball right down into Pirates’ quarter, selfishness and poor handling lotting the visitors dear. Old Boys here lost Strachan, injured for a few minutes. Pirates were penalised in close proximity to their goal. Stewart 's kick going wide. Old Boys met Pirates’ backs passing with a. similar movement, but nothing decisive eventuated. Then McAuliffe intercepted a pass and got clear away, punting out to the wing, where Cowie obtained possession and raced over in the corner, and taking the kick himself he landed a beautiful goal: Taihape Pirates .. .. 5 Old Boys 0

Soon after setting the ova] in motion again Old Boys rushed away after stopping the visiting backs, Pirates saving by kicking into touch in goal. Final result: Taihape Pirates 12 Old Boys 0 In the evening both teams were the guests of the Wanganui Rugby Union at dinner, a capital spread being put on at the Aotea Buffett. The Taihape team returned home yesterday by motor. thoroughly satisfied with the result of their trip. Accompanying the team were several officials of the Taihape Sub-Union, and the result of their discussions with local officials should do much to bring the Sub-Union into closer touch with its parent body, tothe mutual benefit of those concerned. —Chronicle. THE LEAGUE GAME. ENGLAND v. QUEENSLAND.

BRISBANE, June 20

Twenty thousand people witnessed the England v. Queensland League game, which was very fast throughout. Queensland opened the score with a penalty goal. Soon afterwards Bacon (England) scored, and Gronow converted. Wagstaffe captured the ball, and passed to Bacon, who scored, but Gronow failed , : to convert. Immediately upon resuming Fewin (Queensland) kicked a goal from the field. On play resuming, Broadfoot secured the ball, and raced up the wing. Thomas tackled Broadfoot, who scored. Thomas appealed, but the try was allowed. It was not converted. Immediately Rogers secured the ball, and eventually Stoekwell scored, and Gronow converted, d before half time. Baton (Queens. ~d) succeeded with a try, which was not converted. There was twenty-five minutes' play in the second half before the score was altered, Queensland having the best of the play, and several times nearly scoring. The English defence held until they forced play infield, rvhere Gronow kicked a penalty goal. Rees (England) next retired injured. Play developed rough towards the end. Stoekwell received the leather from Rogers, and scored, and Gronow kcked a goal. Queensland rose to the occasion, and Richards scored a try, which Paten converted. Almost on time Rogers and Wagstaff were prominent in a passing rush, which resulted in Bacon scoring. Gronow converting. The final score was: England 25 Queensland 15
