TOWN IMPROVEMENT WORKS.
TOWN CLERK REPORTS PROGRESS. At the meeting of the Borough Council on- Friday night the Town Clerk submitted the following report of the progress of the works in eon- ! neetion with the £17,000 loan:— I beg to report that despite the wet weather of late, satisfactory progress ha s been made with the drainage works. In Kokakoa and Weka Streets in particular the work was pushed on owing to a large amount of excavation being carried out with the aid of tho plough and scoop. During the excavation in Weka street an old water service main leading to 'the flushing tank was struck. This I had lifted, securing approximately 300 feet of Lloyd and Lloyd’s one-inch galvanised pipe, worth say £ls. The pipe laying and filling should be completed to a terminal point in Weka street by to-morrow. I haVo fixed the levels for the manholes and mud tanks in Kokakoa street. The construction of the former is now in progress. Main street manholes (six) have been completed to the correct levels. Huia street (three), Tur street (eight), Robin street (one), school (one), have also been built, but the insides of some of these have yet to be plastered. There are still ten to construct, including Kokakoa street, but the greatj est depth of any of these is only three j feet eight inches. I The excavation for the balance of | the drainage work (Kuku street), should, weather permitting, be completed by the end of next week. Tho pipe laying will also be well advanced. leaving only the manholes and mud j tanks to construct to complete the job. The cost of the drainage works up to the 9th hist, is set out hereunder £ s. d. Labour and material 2128 12 8 Pipes to pay for .. 122 16 6 Cement, etc., to pay ifor 27 17 10 2279 7 0 Less lime, etc. sold 12 11 0 , £2266 16 0 The amount set down on the loan schedule for the drainage works was £2200. Tenders for pipes and castings were let for £1166 3/6 in December, 1910, and a tender for laying, etc., was received (excluding above), for £242T 6/4; making a total cost if above tender had 'been accepted of £359'? 9/10. However, the foreman and myself estimated the outside cost of this work at:-*-Pipcs, etc., £1366 3/6; labour, etc., £ISOO, total £2666 3/6, and I'am sure the work will be completed within this figure. Approximately five ton of cement will still be required to complete the works, costing say £4O. and more pipes will also have to be purchased at an estimated cost of £6O. SUICIDE OF RETURNED SOLDIER, BLENHEIM, This day. Harry Crapp, 30, a returned soldier with four years’ service, single, and a labourer, suiceded by cutting Mg thoat with a, razor early this He suffered ill-health for some time, and appeared normal the night before.
