The Pas Lumber Company, Manitoba, is preparing for an output of lumber of 325,0000 ft. per day, equal to a total of 40,000,000 ft for the sea. son. Corporal Francis Pegahmagabow, a Redskin Indian, of Parry Sound, Ontario, is officially credited ‘by the Canadian army with having shot 378 Germans during the War. The corporal. who was a hun’r.el' and trapper in Canada before he enlisted, served as a sharpshooter with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, and it is said that he never missed.
Dr Mercher, a member of the French Academy of Medicine, after an extended investigation, has determined tliat, during a period of five months in 1917,_ :1. total of 3,690,000 shells fell on the front of three French armies. The shells, according io Dl‘ Mercher, killed 13,627 men and wounded 55,412, so that it took 395 shells to kill one man.
' At the meeting of the Wanganul Hospital and Charitable Aid Board on Wednesday, the Inspector of Hospitals forwarded recommendations re alterations. and additions to Taihape Hospital. These included reflobring of sanitary blocks of main wards, repairs to tlieatre, steam steriliser for same, additions to laundry, erection of nurses’ home. Dr H. M, Hay, of Taihape, was appointed to the hon. staff of the Taihape Hospital.
The Raukura school has cause to be well satisfied with the result of the judging in the recent Vvinter Show at Taihape, for out of the thirteen children who made entries, six received first prizes, one second, and two third. Mr J. P, Aldridge has been nominated for the vacant seat on the Wauganui Education Board. Mr Aldridge was a member of the Education Board a few years ago when he did excellent Work for the various s‘choo!s in this district_
An interesting photograph was on view in the dairy produce section at the Winter Show at New Plymouth, :1 picture of four dairy cows. One is the first pedigree Jersey cow brought to Taranaki. The animal belonged to the late Mr W. K. Hulke, who led her by road from Feilding "to Taranaki in the dafis before the railways_
.\ very painful accident, fortunately unattended with fatal consequences, occurred at Mr F. Mickclson’s farm at Tiriraukawa on Wednesday evening. It appears A. Mickelson (a son of .\lr Mickelson’s) and a young man named Jas. Thorpe were filling a “Wizardi’ lamp with benzine, one of them holding a lighted candle. By some mischance ‘the henzine splashed and the vapour ca‘t'ching alight, yoiing Micke'lson’s clothes were speedily :1. mass of flames, and he rushed _iulo the open air, which‘ only fanned the flames.” When Mr Mickelson went out to see what -had hafiipened, he saw hisson rushing about enveloped in flames. He shouted out to him to lie. down and roll, which the boy forf'unately did, and Mr Mickelson ‘tearing off the burning garments, quickly relieved him, but not before he was severely burned about the chest, hands and face. Young Thorpe was also hédly bu.rn&d about the neck, face, and hands. "Dr Sinclair was telephoned for, and with his usual promptitude, was on the spot Within an hour. After dressing the bums, he ordered the boys’ removal to the hospital, where they are_progressing favourably. Thelbuilding in which the accident took place was damaged by fire, but this was soon put out by a hose of water, which has :: 6Olb pressure.
