' JUNIOR I\IATCH. "The match between the Mataroa and Hum juniors was the first game on Saturday. ‘ owing to the wet state of the ground the ball was -hard to handle and consequently the play was mostly with the forwards. The Huias were one player ehort, which was a big handicap, when an untrained team takes the field. The first spell ended with no score. On resuming play, which was average, hung in mid field when the Mataroa forwards got away and scored; the kick failed and the game ended: Mataroa. 3, Huias 0. Mr. Bennett gave every satisfaction as referee. —— 3 ' SENIOR MATCH. . The senior match, Huias V. Pirates, a-gain created much interest among the spectators. The folllowing were the players:—— Pirates—-D. Healy, Dockery, 'l‘_ Sinclair, J. Sinclair, R. Collier, Rose, J. Collier, o’Conell,’ C. Murphy, Jackson, Clements, M‘Auliffe, D. Hay, Maloney, R. Sinclair. Huias.—Symes Ofigley, P. Thomas, M.McLaughlan, G. Maliei-_. R. Maher, McDermott, T. I§enncflt_. Belliss, Whake, Storey, Sully, J. Pini, Chase, Shamrock. Apparently Hnias were going to notch a win if possible, as several alterations were ‘made in the team, which was to their advantage, but they must hunt up more younger players if they are to win. From the start the Huia team made the pace, and had the Pirates on the defence, and shortly after starting Ongley notched a goal from a free kick in a. handy place. Huias 3, Pirates 0. On resuming the Pirates {got busy, and put in some hard work, and forced the Huias down the field, when R_ Collier secured, and put in a. strong run anfl scored. Jackson converted. Pirates 5, 11-luias 3. On resuming play was up and down the field, and very fast, the Pirates gradually working their way down the field, when R. Collier secured and got over the line, scoring between the posts, Jackson converting. Pirates 10, Huias 3.’ Huias were now determined to even.-‘up the score, and made the pace" willing, and had the Pirates busy defending, when the forwards, headed by Belliss, came down together, and Sully scored. The kick failed. Pirates 10, Huia 6. Shortly after half time was called. On resuming the play, though fast, was mostly confined to the forwards; occasionally the Pirate backs tried to get going, but failed to hold the ball. This spell ended with no further score, the game ending Pirates 10. Huia 6. Mr. Kelsall gave every satisfaction as referee. '
NOTES BY ONLOOKER. ‘ The Junior match, Mntaroa v. Huial, Wash poor display of football. Both teams lacked condition, and rerzgaix-e a better knowledge of the game. My advice to these teams is to practice, and also get a competent coach who will impart :1 few points in the finer arts of the game. Both teams will parts of the game_ Both teams will ment if they. expect to be in the final for the cup fixtures. I would suggest the members getting together and having a run of an evening, also procuring a hall and having scrum practice and also to throw the ball about generally so that when the ball is passed on the field it is taken neatly, and ‘not fumbled, as’ is the case at present. The senior match was a considerable improvement on the previous Saturday, as the tendency was more to play the ball instead of the man. The Pirates are to be complimented on the team that took the field, and it would be hard to individunlise any one player,_ as every player filled his position well. The Huias require to look round for three or fopr younger players, to 3511 UP their ranks, as condition told 071 319 Older players as the game Went 011, and 00I1Sequently Belliss, in heading 11 fol‘W&rd rush, generally finished “P WmloU’f» Support from his tezmi. Had Bzntlor been with Belliss in the forwards H2O Pirates Woulfi pr()b{fl)]y‘ have been hard pressed at times.
