An unusual case was heard in the Mag-istrate’s Court at Wellington on Satul'dny, before Mr E. Page, S.M., when a tailor named Herbert Henry Workman pleaded guilty to charges of obtaining money from John Theodore Jorgensen, manager of the firm of J. T. Lewis, Ltd., by means of a false pretence.
The accused, who was successful in securing nearly £2O from the informant, did so by enlisting the sympathies of My Jorgensen, who was led to believe by the defendant, who went to him with teaT’s"iTl hTs éyés, flizit WOl-k~ ‘manfs Wife had died and that the defendant had not the money to provide her with a decent burial. The employees of Lewis, Ltd, were touched with the distressing circumstances of Workma.n_. and in order to show their Sylllpflthye subscribed and purchased a wreath which was taken to WOl-Imlan’s residence. The bearer of the wreath was invited into the house to see the coffin, but the invitation xiras not accepted.
Mr Jorgensen staed that he discovered that accused’s wife was not dead. In reply to a question by the Magistrate, counsel for accused staed that Workman spent the money in drink, with the help of his friends.’ Workman was admitted to probation for three years, ifild ordered to keep from intoxicating liquor during. that period. The magistrate said the case was :one of borrowing, not theft. Another matter for consideration was the aCcused’s family. ""‘
