LIGHT AND PATHS IN LUKE STREET
DEPUTATION T 0 BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A ‘deputation representative of every resident in Luke Stl'ee_t waited on the ‘Borough Council last night ’to urge the claims of that lbcality to light and i’ootpaths. . The. deputation was rbriefly introduced by Cr. Cunninghame, and welcomed by the Mayor.
Mr Loader, afs the oldest r-rartep.ayer' on the street, acted as aspokesman, stating that theresidents on-1 Luke Street would very much like to have footpaths and electric light. F 053paths were most essential on account of the number ‘of children attending the school. At present an Open drain was used as a path. which was nothing short of a menace to safety. Father Harnett saTcT there were 'noal‘l_V .100 school children and teachers using this street Their grievance was that this street was like a. step-son—-and had been forglotten for many years. They had been waiting for some one to take up the cudgels, and get. something done, but the conditions were now unendurable. So badwvas the street‘t.hat a man had to carry his Wife on his back. At present there "Was great ti‘-aflic on the s’r.reet. The conclitiwon was bad enough for adults, but it was infinitely worse for the little ones, and it was for the 100 children he especially appealed. "The road‘ was“ sh: chains long, and they petitioned for six chains of l‘oot~ path. At present. there was a big lake outside the school, and a gondola would be re('fl'l'il'eEl ‘to fr‘§fispol't the children. ’ '
Another memberof the deputation aléo pointed out the deplorable condition of the street.
In reply to the Mayor Father H'-.l':'u-ett said for a footpath it was principally a question of grading; 12 chains would probalbly cost £l2. With regard to the light, this was very badly needed.
Cr. Cunninghame said the Electric Light Vcommitteeb 1133 considered she question, afidiflwere }::repared to rec.)ln"mend "the, ligl_lt if the residents would puy‘{the_ coé_t of wiring-—some £8 8/. This sum lnightpossibly be refunded later on. A " .
The Electrical Engineer said the estimate ‘was from the corner of Kakd Road down Luke Street.——fl'om the last lamp 011 Kalfa Road.
The Mayor said if the work did noti cost £B, they would mat have to pay”;
F':?.Lhex“ Harnett said the engiueer’s suggestion was like ‘taking coals to Newcastle, the light was already down there. ’ The Engineer said they did not understand the positiorf; street lighting was quite apart from house lighting. H" Coming back To the footpaths, the Mayor inquired if both sides were necessary. The formation 0-none side would lessen the burden. Father Harnett said there were 93 children’ toddlitrg to school each day, and they had to jump trenches and 11cgotia/c.e a :<el*ies of pot holes every time. '
The. Mayor admitted a very strong case had been made out fio-r the footpaths for the children. Cr. Fookes suggested that the’ matter be refen.-ed__to the Works Committee to see what\‘c7Juld be done. The Mayfior said the deputation would like the work done as soon as possible. If they dis} not get all they wanted they should not be disappointed. as the Council was “up against it,” but would do all they possibly could. In reply to Cr. 'l‘imbs. Mr Loader saidlihey would leave the selection of which for>fpal.ll should be done to the discretion of the Borough Foreman. "With regard to the‘ light, a recomi nlen<la‘.—ion was emboclied in the Electrict Light Committee's‘ rep'ort fhat current for 21 street light in Luke Street would be SllDDlied free of charge providing the residents asking for same Pay the approximate costuof the extension. This I‘~econlnlendati.on was adopted by the Council. The deputation thanked the Council for its sympathetic reception an'd withdrew.
