TAIHAPE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The monthly meefing of the Chamber of Commefce was held last night, there being present: Messrs Carroll (chairman), E. McLaughlan, Loader, Fookes, Marlow, Lawson, arid Gifford.
Mr Caroll stated, inconneetion with the Taihape-Napier road, that a deputation from the Ran-gitikei County County Council would shortly wait on ‘the Government. in connection th«:-.re-with, and -asking for the Chambers’ ‘support. Mr Doele, one of the councillors, promised to let the Chamber know the result. Later in the evening the matter was discussed, and it was decided to support the efforts of the deputation, and a suggestion was made that a representative of theChamber would be prepared to make ‘one of "the deputation, "if thought advisable. ~
In reply to the Chanlber’s letter re stamp-vending machine, slot telephone,‘ and shortage of certain denominations of stamps at the lo'éal post office, Mr McNickle, thle postmaster, replied that the two former matters were now before the department with his recommendation. A stamp niachinewould be of some relief to the counter, which was too small to permit of threé clerks being employed. ‘With regard to the shortage of stamps, the complaint was hardly warranted with regard to 1d and I?_.d‘stamps, which were always available. As far as Id and 8d stamps for ‘telegrams were concerned, these were out. of stock at headquarters, but the postmaster pointed out that other den‘6Tlinations could be used forptelegranis. The staff had also been reorganised, and was able to meet all demands.
Discussion took place on the limited post otfice space available. and appreciation was expressed of the eflorts of oflicials, to cope with the Work under serious ditficulties. Mr McNickle was to be thanked for his unfailing courtesy and anxiety to study the convenience of the public. A communication was received from Trade Commissioner with reference to the proposal of "the.lnl- - Government to send out a touring exhibition of British goods to visit the Dominions, stating that owing to difiiculties’ it was not possible to do so this year, as intended, and the project had been postponed. Due notice will be given of the date of departure of the exhibition, and the approximate date of its arrival in New Zealand. Some discussion took place on the sub-division of Erewhon Estate for soldier settlement, and the opinion was expressed that it was not suitable for cutting up into small holdings".
After some discussion it was decided to approacli" the Borough Council, pointing out the deplorable state of the Main South Road. and Birch Road, and asking if something could not be done to better their condition.
A slot, telephone for ‘the post office was promised some twelve months ago, and as if has 'nof maferialised, the
member for the district, Mr W. S. Glenn. is to be requested to use his efforts to get the mzfifer attended to, as apparently no Eifisfaction can be got from the Department.
After an informal discussion on various matters of local interest. the Chamber adjourrfed.
