BUTTER PRICES.
SUBSTANTITL INCREASES PREDICTED. WHAT OF THE COMMANDEER. An idea of the prices that can be expected to rule for butter after July next was given by an authority directly concerned in the industry. He stated that the control in connection with the Imperial G'overnment’s contract to purchase the Dolninion’s output would end on July 31st, after which date there would be an open market for the supply, with the result that a substantial im_=l~e3_qe in The price would, it was almost certain, he I'ecol'ded. The Auckland Star first made public this statement, and--it was corroborated by many Wellington merchants, who .s.t:lted on Thursday that once the open market was secured the price was bound. to jump. “'.l‘here is 3, world shorta.ge,” said one, “and the price -for butter is almost suie to remain high.”
"WhatTabout the conlmandeer‘.3” the Times reporfer suggested. “Ah, now you are talking of something that lies ahead,” was the response. “But in any case, commandecr or no commandeer, I predict that the pl'i('.o of butter will not be this side of two shillings. It cannot betho way things are at present.”
