WESTFIELD STOCK SALES.

Yesterday at the weekly Westfield, fat stock market. we penned fat cattle to the number of 602 head, conlpris~ ing 458 steers, 132 cQws° and heifers, and 12 bullocks. The number was far’ in excess of requirements, and all-C-lasses were lower, ordinary and plain cattle suffering most. Choice ox sold as; £2/11/ per 1001 b; ‘prime £2/7/- to £53/10/; "ordinary and plain £2/2/ '. to £2/6/; rough beef £l/7/ Ito £l/13/; cow and heifer beef 15/ tcf £2/8/ per 1001 b. Steers ranged in price from. £lB/10/ to £22 for a, heavy steer; light er, prime, £l4/10/ to £l7/10/4, plain and light £B/10/ to £l3/10/; extra, heavy, prime cow £l6/10/ to £2O/2/6 for a. heifer from Maungatawhiri Valley. HIGH COMMISSIONER’S AU'VICE_ WELLINGTON. May 12.
The Department of ‘Agriculture '-has received the follow’ng cahlegram, dated May 8, from th- High sioner:Meat.——lt is unofilcially ‘reported that the control of New Zealand meat’ will return to the Food Ministry, arm in order to relieve the congestion the prices of imported mutton‘ will be reduced by 2d and 3d per lb.
Butter.—The average price of English butter is 3/4 per lb. It is report ed that the Food Ministry made a contract with Denmark for April-May supplies of iblliiter at £l3 10/ per cm; c.i.t.
Hemp.—The Manila. market is quiet and small business is doing. Prices have declined. “J(’ grade, JanuaryMarch ‘shipment,’ is quoted at £6B; February-April to May-July shipments at £67. The New Zealand market is inactive and prices are lower. Present quotation is: High points, spot £6O, February-April shipment, £55; fair, spot, £56, February-April shill‘ ment £53, sellers_ The wool sales. close to-41331 The value of superior qualities of Merinos‘ has not materially altered, but there was a, tendency to ease towards the close. Other descriPtiollS are now 10 per cent, to 15 per cent. below the closing rates of the last series. Crossbreds are now 10 per cent to 15 per cgnf lower, according to quality. The current value of New Zealand fine criossbreds is 2/10 to 3/3: medium 2/ to 2/7, coarse 1/5 to 'l/3 - Honey-—The’ market is quiet, with :no better demand for New Zealand. Quotations-are nominal,‘ but brokers expect a. better demand soon, on count of the sugar situation- .
