Wild scenes, during: which 21 young man suffered some violence at A the hands of a crowd of angry Women, took place after the inquest at Stepney on Hamil Alice Smith (30). who comniitted stiicide in the Regent's Canal. Mi.=~:s Smith was to have been inurriml to George Fonc-:'(l9) at the beginning of this month‘, but be postponed the marriage. and ull'ilnatel_\'. m°tel- a quarrel. and on the second date ari-anged, the girl received {-1 letter saying that if she didn"r believe him she had better get someone else. She was not agaixi seen alive. -
The foreman of the _'jnr_\' :-air! the young fellow would always have the 'girl’s» death on his mind, and as witness left the court he was assaulted by -:1 large crowd -cf excited women. He got safely away, however, under 2. strong police escort.
