AUSTRALIAN EXPERT ’S VIEVV
XVELLINGTON. April 27
Danish competition in the butter and cheese 111a;-kets is not likely; to increase. according t: Captain W. R. Birks, of the New South Wales De-pzn-tinent of Agriculture. Calptilill Bi].-ks, who was :1 member of the Australian Exp(3diti.o:lul‘_V Force, has re—cently made a tour of Scaiidiiiaviu and North America. and he is now passing through New Zealand on his xvuy to Sydney.
“The Danish productiic--n of butter and cheese declined greatly during the war,” said Captain iBI-ks to-day. ‘The high price of fodder and the. shortage of manures were factors in bringing‘ about the result. The Danish famiers developed othe branches of production, and they are not fending nqw to concentrate again on butter and cheese. They are selling illcrea.~:in,g‘ quantities of dried and condensed milk. and they are 1112‘-.l<ill;=,‘ inipormnt expei-iinents in the development of 2x great trade in fresh milk. Much land. is being devoted to the growillg of seeds such as carrot, ea‘.>bag~cx. avd sugar beet, and this -industry is proving tftlr more p:1y:11)1e than duirying.
F “The deliver)’ of fresh mill: in Lon-y.l-cn is :1 scheme that is being nmlei- ‘ i:lk(‘ll by D7.\lll.\‘il i’:lz'nim*s. TllO Danes believe they can put fresli mill‘: into the Briilsli ‘.llEll'kPl’ in l2u';:(‘ qunnl-ities and get a better price than butter or cheese factories would be able to pay. The extensirm. of this scheme" will reduce still further Danish competition with New Zealanil t‘.‘<lir_V proilucef,’ (‘aptaiu .Bil-ks said he was impressed by the fact that the successful in« tensive farming of Deninarli is based on agricultural eilucrition. A high standard of knowledge‘ is required ~c-t‘ every person engaged "on the land. A farm labourer is not considered to be qualified unless -he has studied at an agricultural school, and the men employed in the higher grades of farm work are experts who have kept abreast of practical experiment and scientific research.
