THE TOWN HALL.
To The Editor. Sil',——l have read. Mr" Lenihan"s rather discursive letter re the above.»It is apparent that your correspondent is not too conversant with the regulations governing the letting of the Hall. The matter will be looked into and replied to later, but there is one paragraph that must be attended to -here and now. Mr Lenihan writes: “This pampering of the alleged rights? of the lessee is'a.ll' very well in its way, but why should there be any collusion between the borough staff or any member thereof. and the lessee in trying to force me to make terms.” . . . Collusion! What is inferred here! Is it "that our Town Hall stall? is in collusion with the lessee for gain or emolument, or for any other purpose? If so, I strongly resent it. Mr Menzies is carrying out the policy measures of the Council Imder our
idirect instructions He is not responsible for the regulations themselves in any wayflbut it is his duty to see to their observance The Town -Clerk has the full confidence of the Council, and I believe of the citizens of our town. By virtue of his position he is not able to defend himself against personal attacks or criticisnifix but he will receive whatever .-protection the Council is able to afford him, and, if necessary, the protection of the thorough solicitor.
The words used ,by‘. Mr Lenihan “collusion with the lessee” has an ugly significance,.which perhaps your correspondént did not intend to imply and in fairness to Mr Menzies-,‘l must ask him to fully explain it or unequivocally withdraw it.—l am, etc._. A. J. JOBLIN.‘
