THE EASTERN IMMIGRANT.
EVIL FOR NEW ZEALAND. LABOUR’S VIEWS. The three Labour members of Auckland, Messrs M. J. Savage, W. E. ’ Parry, and F. N. Bartram, M.P.’s, lore concerning themselves particularly with the influx of Chinese and Hindus -into the country, and this morning they sent to the Prime Minister :1 wire to the following eEeet:——“ln view of the alarming influx of Asiaties and other classes of cheap labour, involving, as it must, the lowering of the living of our people, as well as the probable deterioration in the psysical standard of all races. mixing indiscriminately, we ask that steps be immediately taken. to deal with this jmenace. We understand that 21 Chinese and 52 Hindus are due to arrive by the Niagara. Pending duscussion by Parliament and it mutually satisfactory understanding with the countries involved, we urge that the present law be administered to as: far as possible minimise the evil.” I On Tuesday morning Ml‘ Savage; expounded his views upon the Asiatic‘ influx. He said the question was mighty one that could. not be settled] simply by passing a law, but wonldl have to be decided by representativesi of'the various nations. New Zealandi was not like Australia, he pointed‘ out, and if we were going to allow‘ all kinds of races to come ‘into the country and mix indiserimina’rel_v, it could not fail to do harm. The education test, he averred, was only a three that did not decide the problemat all. The teeming millions of the Eastern countries were only a stone’s throw awa_v. They were being ‘edu‘--cated, slowly perhaps and often wrongly, but sooner or later, t‘he_v would come to see the law of force. and though perhaps. New Zealandi could hold out for a ‘little, in the long run, resistance would be useless.‘ Mr Savage considered that the longer the country permitted the present im-I migration. laws to remain in force, the more difiieult. it would be to stay the rushing horde of Asiatics.
