THE NEW GOVERNOR-GENERAL.
I New Zealanders will be pleasantly” surprised to read of the selection of Viscount Jellicoc as Governor-General of New Zealand. Pefsoiially no more M popular choice could have been made, yand ‘in sTl'ch a’ position pcrsonalitly" 'counts for a great deal’. It is seidoni that a British Dominion gets a Govrernor who is known to. its people, but isince the visit of last" year New Zea~ ‘ landers -are able to say that they know ~both Lord and Lady Jcllicoe, arid their happy recollections of that event will enable them to expreés a unanimous and nnhesitating appr-‘oval of the appointment. In the circumstances it is }natural that the personal side should be first emphasised. Lord Jellicoe’; will be regarded in New Zealaud more ‘in ‘the light of :an~~'2;ld friend than a, ‘new governor, but‘ ‘the appreciation lwill not end there. The new Governor—~generalship will be welcomed as much’ for Lord J ellicoe’s high administrative .capacity and exceptional experience as for the more intimate qualities which endeared him to the people during the recent tour. The King has done high honour to New Zealand by sending the IVictor of Jutland to the Dominion as his representative. The Nr:.'_y‘ has not ‘yet supplied fnany governors to the Overseas Dominions, and it has never given one of such higl rank. Fr-om all points of Vl"eW,'New .'<'. -alaml has reason to be gratified at the appoint‘menf, ’
