Mr C. K. \Vilson, who intro<_luce_,d subject, saidhe was informed that freezing works of the district '§\'ei-1;»: congested and would have to: clggsjéi down next week. He thought the eiie;-'. cutive, as lepresentiiitg thc:fai'(l}liel3srj should make a strong pl'otes:l:,?[’§.'<)r‘”tfi,g Government in regard to the liia,’C:{'(3nl'j. Farmers had stock in the paddock that should have Been in the _ freezing Works and paid for. He wasNot'_'_opTinion that Auckland had not been ‘fairly treated in regard to the allocation of shipping space, and that the farmers of this district: were sufiering. more severely than those- of other districts. The Dominion as 9. whole also was suEcring_morc seriously than other countries. It had been authoritatively stated that ships had (been diverted from New _Zealand to Australia, and that there were now only about 1,000,000 carcases in cold storage in Australia, as (-olupared with about 6,000.00?) in the Dominion.
Mr J. E. Makgill said he was not in a position to say exactly what SWO9 the southern freezing works had received, ‘but Auckland had ee.l't/aiirlly been -badly treated in A_3:e.<peCt to freight allocations for meat. A great deal of freigll‘f_spflee had been allotted to Auckland for butter and cheese, but this did not alleviate the pgsjtioxi in regard to meat. In resp(_2_c_t"'_to the shipping problem, all -that could be done was to’ protest as strongly as possible to the Government, ‘butprobabvly the real tiifiiculty was the extreme congestion at Home. The Imperial Government was allowing‘ large _s_uppl_i'es of South American chilled meat to go on to the Home market. The secret of this probably lay in the fact that a large amount of British capital was invested -‘En the South American meat business‘, and that there were heavy commitments on the part of the Im-_ perial Government that had been entered into Ullringfithe war, It was decided to again make strong representations. to the Government in roe’!-prcl to the riecesesity for obtaining nirwe refrigefated shipping space for Jneat. . .
