NEW ZEALAND BUTTER.
...._o..__.. NEW’ SEASONS OUTPUT.
INTEREST IN BRITAIN.
LONDON, Feb, 18.
E Butter producers in New Zealand may be interested to learn that at an early date there will depart from this country several representatives of ‘large companies—repr-esenting busiRness interests of several nrillion lpounds in value—who intend to negotiate with the producers in the Dominion for the purchase, if possible, of next sea.son’s output or portions of it. Great developments were taking place with regard to New Zealand butt-er, and unless they had. .-been met and checked by those representing New Zealand interests in London what might have been equivalent to a huge trust might have been thrust upon this country.
" New Zealand’s contract with the Imperial Government for its output of butter extends until the end of the present season, at the price of 181/ per cwt. In July, 1919, Sir Thomas Mackenzie learned that the British Government had paid to the Danes 282/ per cwt, and he then requested the Ministry of Food to re open the question with a View to granting New Zealand producers the higher price. This was refused, and from that time to the present date the High Commissioner has constantly urged that in justice to New Zealand producers the Ministry of Food should increase the price paid to the Dominion to something approximating that paid to the Danes and the Home butter-makers and the Irish butter—makers'. This the Ministry still declines to do.
