SERIOUS SITUATION DEVELOPING. TROOPS RECALLED ACROSS THE CANAL. LOI;\TDONz April 7. Late messages from Cairo indicate that a serious situation is developing in Palestine. Troops have been recalled to ‘the western bank of the canal. Moslem and Jewish riots commenced on Sunday, and continued -on Monday. Already there have been 188 casualties. _ The trouble arose through the Moslems. celebrating the Feast of Nebimoussa while the Jews were cellebrating the Passover. Rival processions met in the streets, and brought illfeeling ‘to a head. The Moslems resent the Zionist idea thfi the Jews should govern Palestine, "though they are a small minority‘. A Moslem procession from Hebron was approaching the Jaifa Gate at Jerusalem when .a cry was raised, “The Jews are attacking us!” The Moslems dashed in at ‘the gate, and attacked all the Jews in the vicinity. The latter, prepared for trouble, used knives and stones freely. There were many fights in the vicinity of the Jaffa Gate until British troops intervened and stopped the disorders.
