QUESTION OF CONTROL‘
Last -week a cablegram was published in which riiention "was made of the possibility of the continuance of the control in Britain of dairy produce, as at present. The eablegram indicated t_hat there was :1 probability that the Government in England would refuse to remove the control from these products, and it was further stated that the present al-rangelnents- were unfair in that control operated only against Dominion shipments, whereas _lrish butter was coming on to the market free. The position I‘egai'ding the future shipment -and sale of New Zealand butter and cheese has not ‘changed for some -time. VVhen the question was first raised some months ago, the Prime Minister, {with the consent of the producers’ representatives, made 5 inquiries from the British Government ias to their wishes in the matter. In reply, the British Government inquired on what terms the New Zealand producers would be prepared to sell. As ‘the New Zealand producers Wish to flhave a free market, and as the teleigrani was not definite in some partigculars to admit -0‘? a, direct answer being given, Mr Massey made further 3 inquiries by cable. No conclusive reiply has yet. been received. The New izealand Government has not yet had ’advice as to whether the British Govi ernment intends. to‘ continue the comimandeer or not.‘ Mr Massey has exgpressed his persoiial opinion that the icontrol of butter may be continued, [but that he does not think there will fibe any control in respect of cheese.
