Dennis Gunn, charged with murder and robbery a‘t Pqnsonby, has been remanded for a further eight days.
The lighthouse keeper at’ Northhead, Manakau. one night recently saw a wild’ looking man emerge from the bush, mount the beacon, and wave a, cloth or handkierchief. The “keeper concluded the visitor was ‘an escaped lunatic, and hastenedio advise the police. The latter was unable to ieach the lighthouse that night, but got in touch with two hushmen, who early in the morning found the man sleeping in the light-keeper’s 4 chair, the mechanism being none the worse for his guardianship. He proved to be a harmless old man sufiering from ill-health, who motoretl to Tikirangi. He dismissed the taxi and got lost in ‘he bush. Coming upon the lighthouse he conceived the idea of signalling a passing steamer. He was in a, very low physical condition, and was conveyed to the nearest. police ‘station, ivhere he satisfied the police that beyond eccentricity there was nothing to warrant his detention. He was ultimately handed over to his friends.
