Advices 1"1'om the Chatham Islands state that the fishing i.ndus’tl‘y on the island has been at a slamlstill for the last. two months. The season usually colnmences about the end of Janual'y. Prior to the opening date the fishermen made -.1 demand for an inerease=in the price of fish. They asked for 1-led per lb, instead of 1d per Ib, the sum previously paid. The fishing company refused to grant the increase, and consequently the works were closed down.
The fishermen, after holding out. for two months, have decided to resume fishing‘ at the old rates. It is understood the fishermen intend forming a union, if regis-I‘l'atioll cfin beobtained. Dr G. H. Gibson, who has been medicil officer and stipendiary magistrate on the islands for the past 14 years, has relinquished these positions, and has returned to the mailgland.
