,‘ MONTHLY MEETING. - vThe monthly meeting of the Rangitikei County-Council was held at Marton on Wednesday» There were present: Crs. A. G. SiInDSOTI' (in the chair), T. Duncan, W. DOOI9, F- R- HBrice, R. Brown, H. o'callaghén, and A‘.’Gibbs. CORRESPONDENCE. The Public Works Department Wrote, advising payment on ao°°“nt of the following works: —— 01163911111 bridge, £500; Mataroa.-Ruanui Road, £6O; Taihape-_Wa.iouru Road £180; Inland Road (balance of grant) £8; Owhakura Road, £lO6. ‘ The Chief Surveyor Wrote, fo’i'Warding tracing of road in Awarua. 4A, 3C, and 4H (M. Ofßrien’s road).——lt was decide&(l to take over the road. The Commissioner of Crown Lands Wrote, offering the Council‘five acres of .-section 3, block V., Gfiinewairua. S.D., at £ll -per acre, for use as a roadman’s 'cottage.—lt was decided to write to the Minister of Lands, requesting him to vest the section in‘ the Council fre‘e'of cost'as a Wol'kel]’S“ dwelling, the Council undertaking to pay the cost of survey. The Public Trust Office wrote, 313-‘ proving of..the loan of £35,000 for metalling -roads in Ruanui riding, at 5?; -per cent.,' plus 1 per cent. sinking ..fund for 36% years, and stating that the application for a.'l'oan'or £60,000 for roading and lbritlging in El-ewhon riding would ibeconsidered in Novcm- ' her next. . 1

Messrs Fullerton-Smith and (SO., solicitors, wrote, forwarding plans of the new road into McDonell{s propery in‘ Lower Ra;l‘l‘gitikei for the Coun-

The engineer reported that the Work had been done.

Cr. og'Callaghan' said the settlers on this road had agreed to go in for‘ a loan of £SOO to improve the road. He proposed that the loan be applied for. This was agreed to.

G. G. Oliver wrote, offering the Council 80,000 bricks at £5 10/ per 1000, -delivery to be given‘ on his property near Utiku. It was decided to reply that the‘ Council did not require brieks at present. 0

_A. F. Gibbs and‘Co. applied for permission to cross Puke and Tuhoe roads with a. sawmill tramway.

The permission asked for was granted, subject to the crossings being constructed to the satisfaction of the engineer.

J. E. Hurley wrote, objecting tp the closing of the Koeke public pound.

Tendenss were dealt with for metalling, works in various parts of the couhtry, The tender of Tate Bros. of Te 'Kuiti, for gravelling about 257 ‘chains of Murrayfs Track Road, Tiriraukawa, was accepted »provision‘ally. ' The tender :_é_f A. W". Orilvie for metalling about 10 miles Ruanui-U-pper Turakina Valley roads, was ‘provisionally accepted. Tenders for building Upper Kawhatu and Hikural_lgi suspension bridges, 180 fet and 160 feet respectively (timber and cables supplied by Council) were declined, and left in the hands of the engineer to_ deal .With. " ‘ ‘ " - A tender for forming and culverting ing 200 chains Kohikuraeroa Road, near Taihape, was also declined, and left in Mr Mair’s -hands. , WAGES OF ROADMEN. The acting-chairman moved that the wage.s.of permanent roadmen be increased to 13/ a day as from Ist April, 1920. - ’ Cr. F. '-Brice suggested that the Council should confer with Manawatu and Orua Counties with a View to ar-‘A Tanging a. standard wage, The chairmanfs motion was seconded by Cr Brown, and carried. LICENSING DRIVERS OF MOTOR VEHICLES. Cr. F. Brice stressed the necessity for compelling drivers of motor vehicles to pass an examination of com59eten°Y- He stated that there were 110 W - great number of cars in the county, and these were rapidly in-‘ creasing The acting-chairman, Cr. F. Brice,‘ and the clerk were appointed a com» mittee to go into the question of framing a by-law, and reporting to next meeting. ' , KOEKI POUND.
