and it is still impossible to estimate the damage.
The He:-ald’s Paparoa correspondent, telegraphing to-night .snyls: Widespread damage has been done to [the Otamatea county roads and bridges. Heavy loss has been suffer;ed by farmers, who have had their fences carried away by slips and their stock killed. At VVaipu Gorge all the Original wooden Ibridges, numbering 20 or 25. were carried away, only a large concrete bridge remaining. Conflicting accounts have come to hand regarding the motor accident in the gorge. It is now stated tlmr the party, overtaken by flood, moored the cm‘ to a tree and Were rescued t'l'sTn the top of the car.
A special meeting of the Otamatea Council will be held to-morrow to consider urgent work's ‘to ‘afford temporary access to isolated settlers.
Vehicular traffic cannot get through to the back districts‘ find thy; renders the c:u-ting of food supplies at present impossible. Governmerit aid is urgently necessary, as the local bodies” resources -cannot cope with the exDenditllfe réquirecffo repair the damage. the cost of which will run into thousands of pounds.
