Duncalf, in whose name the ticket was bought, is a Jesmond miner. When congratulated on his good luck, he said: That's nothing. We are go ing to get first yet.” He added that he intended to continue mining and to invest hi s share of over £SOO in a house. He is not a race-going man, and was not specially interested in the result of the Newmarket, though he knew that Gambler's Gold’s chance was good. He went to a funeral on the day cf the race, and on the way home bought a paper, which announced the result. The other two members of the syndicate are Messrs H. Jenkinson and J. Baggs, both married miners working at Jesmond. They had been sending for tickets for two years, and won two other prizes of £lO, This is not the first instance of miners ’’luck. Some years ago, when there wa s a special s weep of £IOO,000, two Newcastle miners drew the first prize of £25,500.
