ALLEGED MURDER ON THE ARMAGH.
MAN DIES AFTER BEING STRUOK
AND KICKED.
WELLINGTON, March 23,
At 7.30 this evening a disturbance occurred on the steamer Armagh, lying at the Glasgow wharf, as a result of which Robert. MeNab, 29 years of age, storekeeper of the steamer Waikawa, was fatally injured. It appears that McNab visited the Armagh for the purpose of assisting a. fireman named Collins, who had been paid off, ashore with his luggage. When M.=.Nul) :u'— rived at the head of the Arnlagh’s midships gangway, two men, who were not members of the crew, were standing on deck. It is stated that one of these men struck Collins, knocking him down. As Collins was getting up MgNab moved forwurd, and innnl-dizlt(~ly he Was knocked down by the man who had first struck Collins. It is also stzrted that as McNab Was lying on -the deck he was kicked three times, and it was then noticed that. he made no attempt to rise, and that he lmd Been seriously injure<‘l. The police and a. doctor were summoned, and on anival the doctor found that MeNab was dead. The man who is alleged to have struck I\'le/Nab had walked ashore in the meantime, and up In the present has not been arrested. FIREMAN ARRESTED. WELLINGTON, This Day. In connection with the alleged murder on board the steamer Armagh, as a result of inquiries made of several boarding-houses in the city last night and shortly ‘before 11.30 two police oificers arrested a sh-ip‘s fireman named Benjamin Harry Bright {Lt a lodg-ing-house in Upper Willis Street. Bright, who was in bed at the time, was immediately conveyed to the Central Police Station where he was charged with having murdered McNab. He will be brought before the Magistrates’ Court this morning.
