CASUAL WORKERS’ WAGES INCREASED.

The Minister of Public Works announced to-day that he had brought the matter of The rate of pay of casilal workers in the employ of the Department before Cabinet this morning, and that Cabinet has agreed ‘that all such workers should receive an additional bouus of one shilling a, day, the bonus to be paid from March Bth. This is to al3'pl_V to all men earning pay at the rate of from 12/ to 14/ per day, inclusive, and the rates will therefore be from 13/ to 15/ per day, and the increase is to be given to casual employees only. Permaiienft men, such as gangers, are not, for the present, at any rate. included under this bmius.

4_~\dvice 111:1! the tunnellers engaged at the Huaru tunnel on the Nol;th. Auckland Main Trunk railway, have ceased work, was received to-day by the Auckland Railways League. It was stated ‘that the outside men were still wol'l{ixlg‘, but xvcre In sympathy with the strikers. It is understood the men ‘have defermined. Hot to resume until the demand for 16/ a shift for tunnellers and 15/ :1 day for railway workers is conceded. Men engaged on Work at the tunnel previously struck in 1917 and the strike lasted twelve months.
