THOSE VERANDAH POSTS.

DISCUSSION AT THE COUNCIL.

The question of aligning the veran- , dah posts in Main and Tui Streets with the new kerbing at. present being constructed,‘ Which. has caused considerable friction between property-owm ers and the Council, was discussed at considerable length at ‘the Council meeting on Friday. When the question of fixing the width of the footpaths in Tui Street was under discussion, it was only a natural transition to the footpaths in Main Street. Cr. Reid, chairman of the Works Committee, said all property-owners on the west side of Main Street should be compelled to shift their verandah posfs or pay the cost of extending the kerbing of «the footpath the four or five inches necessary to obviate this. Having to compel owners on the east side to shift the posts had created a lot. of trouble, and he suggested, to avoid friction, that the kerbing should be extended on the east, and he further suggested that the Council should confer with the owners on the east side to see if they would pay the difference \ in the cost of the extension. Cr. Davies would like to see some scheme evolved to put the cost on the loan, and not let it be borne by the individual.

Cr. Reid repeated that it would only be necessary to extend the kerb four or five inches. On the bther side. of the sheet shifting the posts had already cost a lot of money, and they wished to try to avoid this. ’

Cr. Fookes said the verandahs were on public property, and the owners’ costs of shifting should not be saddled on the ratepayers. Cr. Davies inquired what the cost of the erdfensions would be‘? The Town Clerk replied, approxiniately 30/ per chain for five or six inches, or about £3o.in all. Some discussion took place as to ‘What the attitude would be of those on the east side if this kerb extension was carried out for the benefit of those on -‘the west. side, Councillors agreeing that two wrongs would not make a right. The fact; that one side had to shift the posts was considered not to be a. good argument that the other side should be made to shift them also. The Council was out to try and avoid all expense possible. Cr. Reid then moved: “That. the edge of the kerbing on the west side of the street be brought to the required distance to avoid shifiting the verandah posts.” p The ‘Mayor said itpdid not -appear fight to pass this resolution without ‘(knowing where the money was to come from.‘ p A

Cr. Davies thought the ‘east. side should be compensated out of the }oan, and this suggestion was added to Cr. Reid’s resolution.

The motion was then put and _carried, it being understood that the motion was only in the spirit of saving expenses, and without any prejudice Whatever of the Council’s 1-ifzhfs. Cr. Cunninghame did not vote. Cr. Fookes voted against the motion, anti desired that his vote should be recorded.
