It was reported lately that as the result" of the increased price of hides, boots for adults will shortly Show an increase of from 17/ to 25/ a pair. A New Plymouth bootinaker, discussing the matter the other day, said that though a pair of boots weighed only about five pounds, and hides had gone up about 1/ per p'sund, there was :1. good deal of wastage in the hides before being converted into boots. On sole leather the loss was 33 1-3 per cent, on uppers (kip) 50 per cent, and ealfskins 66 per cent. On the fancy Chrome lines, chemically tanned, the wastage was even much greater.
