It was reported lately that as the result" of the increased price of hides, boots for adults will shortly Show an increase of from 17/ to 25/ a pair. A New Plymouth bootinaker, discussing the matter the other day, said that though a pair of boots weighed only about five pounds, and hides had gone up about 1/ per p'sund, there was :1. good deal of wastage in the hides before being converted into boots. On sole leather the loss was 33 1-3 per cent, on uppers (kip) 50 per cent, and ealfskins 66 per cent. On the fancy Chrome lines, chemically tanned, the wastage was even much greater. It might fairly be clzfiirred that it took lllb of raw hide to make a pair of men’s boots, for in the tanning process there were also suhstantial losses, Tlms the increase on’ the cost of raw material would he 11/, and then there had to be taken into account the increase of capital required, and the retailers’ profits on the greater outlay. ;\ltogethel' at present prices for hides. the publie. he said. must be I)rep:lred to find an extra l-I_/ to 15/ for a pair of adult boots.
