HON. A. M. MYERS LEAVES FOR ENGLAND.

COMPLIMENTARY "DINNER IN WELLINGTON.

WELLINGTON, this day

At a complimentary dinner tendered last night to the Hon. A. M. Myers, who is leaving for England with his wife and family, by the Megantic. today, Mr Myers said he would not be back in time to be present at.‘ the next session of Parliament. Visits of‘colonials to the Mother Country had the effect of widening their knowledge, and he believed it to be absolutely essential that representatives not only of -the political world, but also of commerce as well, should pay periodical visits to the Old Land. Many misunderstandings would be removed were they to do that. As a result of his first visit in 1900 he became ill!‘ berlain and laying down scientific ence, and still maintained we should trade moreand more with our own kin. There was no reason why the British Empire Should not be selfcontained, but only by carrying out the ideas of the late Joseph Chamberlain and layin gdown ;<::ienti;ic tariflfs could that muc-h-desired :I‘oje~:t be realised. “We drift from time ft) time, for the reason that we have no defined policy," added Mr }.lym's, “but I believe We -can take a Wider view of things by making visits to older lands. I hope by the j‘*Y‘(?SC“.l‘, visit I will be able to assimilate knowledge which will be of use to my fel-low-citizens on my return. New Zealand was a glorious country. which had a great future, and I hope the ::t‘zl-.-"-ment to the Mother Country, which has never been greater than at we present time. will continue to grow. Immigration should be fostered so that the Empire may become self-contained and stand for freedom and justice stronger than ever.”
