The surgical operation performed on Prime Minister at Wellington on Tuesday was for the removal of a cyst which had developed on his neck. It was not regarded as a serious operation, and the Premier will probably resume his duties before the end of-the week. A small lake ‘two miles from Karioi and eight miles from Ohakune, in the direction of Ruapehu, has devel~ oped 'tllerlllal activiay during the last few months. Formerly it was an exceptionally cold lake, but it has now become warm, and the wafexf. formerly quite clear, has become cloudy, (widently as a result of tliermal ac~ tivity below. Anglers who have been in the habit of fishing for trout apparently’ were the first to discover the change, The lake, which is a few miles from the last of the crater lakes, is oval in shape, with a width of about a quarter of a mile, and is exceedingly rbeautiful,' being wooded to the edges. _ '
The acute shortage of rice which existed in Auckland a few weeks ago has lately been .relieved by the arrival of shipments from Australia, but the ‘price remains as high as before, being now £75 per ton wholesale, and 9d per lb retail (says the Herald). It is not considered by Auckland mercliants at all likely that there will be any further increase, however, even though supplies may be very short for at least a year, for the reason that rice is not essential to the white man's diet, and people will simply leave off buying it. Already the demand is stated to have fallen by about 50 per cent during the last eight months. The golf putting at the sports yesterday attracted a crowd yesterday afternoon, and the interest. was maintained till the last putt was made. Mrs Arthur James and Mr Barknlan tied with 6 each, and in the play off Mr Barkman won with 6‘ Mrs James score being 8. The first prize was a guinea trophy, and Messrs W. McLennan and Gilchrist’s Rose Bowl valued four guineais. The golf putting netted £9 and stepping the distance brought £6 1/ to the sports funds. Mr J, Mortland, who was steward in charge of these two competitions, was out to beat the previous best record, and he has certainly succeeded in doing so in the golf putting. .
