For the two prisoners who escaped from custody at Why? fane last. week in Constalble Cumlni;:;‘s car, there was a time of reckoning in VVhaka—tane Police Court. Before Mr VV. G’. Kenrick, S.M., Ernest John Brasting was charged that. he escaped from lawful custody and Tapnke te VVhetu' was charged that he was an incorrigible rogue and escaped from legal confinement. Both pleaded guilty.» Brasting, as the leading spirit in the joy ride, was sentenced to three months’ hard labour in Auckland gaol. Tapuke to three weeks.’ hard labour in. Whaktane prison. At the time of his escape Brasting was on remand to appear in the Auckland Court to answer a charge of stealing 11 cases of benzine from a launch at Avondale, and Tapuke was serving a month’s sentence for theft of a cheque.
