LEAP YEAR DANCE AT UTIKU.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) It was a happy thought that inspired the ladies of Utiku to celebrate this year of their special privilege, , ‘by holding a dance, and the function. which eventuated last Friday night, must easily rank as one of the most successful and enjoyable that has yet taken place. The public hall was the scene of the revels, and a. plentifril display of greenery and bunting changed the somewhat barren appearance of the hall, while the stage was tastefully ::r:-anged as a drawing room. Ypwnrdg, of forty couples took the floor; which was in excellent order. Visitors were present from Tai-i hape, Ohutu. and other parts -of the district. Misses E. Gallagher and M. Christe-u;”=.:\n were M.C‘s., and not only were ’[i-t-'3' indefagitable in looking after the dancers’ interests, but they never alloewd ‘the fun to lag, and in this ]‘eS;*r‘.Cf they gave the mere man . a lesson in how to run a dance. Mrs Arthur Supplied the dance music. and as good wine needs no vbush, so do-es Mrs Arrhuns music need no praise. Sufiice to say that many high encomiums were heard from the dancers as to the excellent music and time supplied by Mrs ‘Arthur. Extras were played in first rate style by Miss K. Winiata and Messrs T. Potaka and M. Hiroa. Mr Jack Allen. of Taihape, "favoured the company with a song. A soft drink stall, under the capable management of Mrs Gallagher, was largely patronised. Mrs C. Jones made an efficient secretary, and to] gether with her comnli'ttee—Més-§ dames Arthur, Matthews, Johansen, Gallagher. Misses Gallagher, Christensen and E. Farr———are to be heartily pongratulated on the success of the dance. for they worked hard. and fully deserved the numerous congratulations they received. A dainty, but ample supper was not the least noteworthy feature of the evening, After! supper Messrs S. McAlister and R. W. Campbell took up the duties of M’s.C., which they perfdrmed in their’ well known manner. The committee desire to express their thanks to Mr and Mrs Arthur for their generous assistance. and to the gentlemen who assisted in the preparation of the floor and in the decoration of the hall. Dancing was kept up until early morning. and Byron's lines aptly de--scribe the sentiment of the dancers: “On with. the dance,’;’ let joy be un-I
confined. No sleep till morn, when youth and pleasure meet. To chase the glowing hours with flying feef.” And thus was Leap Year ceiebl'al“ed in Utiku, and another \'er_v pleas~ ant memory stored away in Inenlor_v,’s store house.
