AN OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW
ZEALAND.
5 The nlanuf:lct.ure of milk products ; in Great Britain, Holland, Canada, and ;the United States has recently been ithe subject of Special inquiry by Mr W. Denxpster, of the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture, who has just returned from a tour abroad. In his report upon his investigations; which appears in the “Journal of Agriculture,” Mr Dempster states that it is certain the demand for milkpowdcr exceeds the present production, but that how much further production can be increased without exceeding the demand it is hard to gauge. When the milk-powder industry started in Arnerirnsv. this phase Jfi the business was Coll> lered, and only buildings of :1 tenrpor.-.l*y nature were erected. Now that the milk-powder business was more firmly established. more permanent buildings were being erected, so that the erection of term porary buildings was not to be recommended. If it came to the survival of the fittest, New Zealand would be one of those countries to survive, provid.ed the quality of the powder was equal to that of other countries. There was every reason to believe -that our powder should be equal to. if not bDt~ tel‘ than, any purodueed. as our cows were most.l_v grass fed and our pastures good. If we did not succeed it‘ would be because the manufacturer or farmer had failed to carry out the good work which the cows began. \\’e‘ could produce milk more cheaply than any other country, thanks to our climate. railfall. and the milking machine.
