PRICE OF BREAD AND FLOUR.
VVELLINGTON, March 2.
The Prime Minister conferred with members of the Board of Trade and some Depart~m.ental officers regarding the price of flour amd bread. He informed a Donlilii_on reported afterWflfds that the matter had been considered at great length, and certain decisions reached. These decisions would have to be referred to Cabinet for approval, and in the meantime. he could make no anmouneement as to prices. There is reason to believe that the increase of twopence in the price of the four pound loaf, announced on Saturday, will not be confirmed, and that flour will not ianerease in price to the extent already reported——that is by £3 a. ton. The continuance of the Government’s subsidy on flour may be necessary in order to keep the prices down. The announeemeant of prices made from Christchurch at the end of last week was premature. Final decision rcsts with Cabinet which hasi not yet had an opportunity of considering details. Mr Massey states that the Government was takieng action to‘ prevent holders of wheat from making. unfair profits when the new prices; came into operation. Complaint hast been made in the South Island that the J millers are likely to benefit Veryt largely by the changes mow under eon- I sideration. 1
