Wild cattle in the Lake Waik;=—r.e—moana. district appear to be incref Sing in numbers, and their ferocity has become a menace to travellers. Two or three parties whieh‘h=.lve been attached have had narrow escapes. When ~-a-velling velling on horseback along the Jake tracks a few weeks ago the Rev. Geo. Budd, of Devonport, and his party were charged by a huge black bull in the darkness. His ‘horns fortunately missed the horses, although one man ’s leg was grazed. The travellers found refuge on a tree: stump about Bft. high, and there they_had to stay from about eight o’elock to hlalf-pas‘ ten, the bull in the meantime remain: :g in undisputed possession of the track, and paying no attention to the hm-ses which had gone into the scrub. J:‘in~ ally a party from“ the aceoniniodation house, where the travellers were expected, rode up, and the bull abandoned the siege and made ofi T-he next day a p'arty tracked him for four miles and shot him. He proved to ‘re the largest animal the sportsmen had seen, the skin being cut in two for transportation through the bush.
