FRACAS ON A WHARF.
MAN THROWN INTO RIVER. DARGAVILLE, Feb. 24. Trouble occurred on the Dargaville Wharf at "about half—past six ofclock last evening, which has led to two ar-' rests being made. It is stated that two sailors on a vessel in port had been drinking wine in the forecastle. Jack Murphy, who was on the vessel, refused to drink with -them, and it is believed that subsequently he was tormented by the others. Blows followed, and Murphy left the ship. He again met the two seamen on the wharf later in the evening. Murphy states that he was attacked by the two men, and after being kicked and struck was thrown into the ,‘Wairoa River. He went under, and when he rose the crew of the scow Houto threw him a rope, which he caught and was pulled ‘bu to the wharf.
MUrDh.V adds that when he reached the Wharf both his assailants had gone. ‘He turned to go back to his ship, but when passing the fire tstation he found -them waiting for him. Avoiding 3 bIOW, Murphy ran off, and then met Constable Nield, to whom he reported the matter.
Two brothers have been arrested by ‘the police in connection into the atfair.
