THE FIJI TROUBLE.
MANY STRIKERS RETURN TO WORK. AN INDIAN DIES OF‘ WOUNDS. WELLINGTON, Feb. 18. The -Governor-General has received messages from the Governor of Fiji intimating that the Indian representative nominated to the commission of inquiry 'by the strike leaders has ap- _ pealed to his countrymen urging -re- } resumption of work pending the commission’s report. -Another message states that considerable numbers of Indians have returned to Work. An affray occurred on February 14, when the police had to disperse a. crowd damaging a bridge. The front rank made a baton charge, but was in l. danger of being overwhelmed, whereupon the rear rank fired a few revolver shots. Three Indians were wounded, one of whom succumbed despite prompt medical attention. A magisterial inquiry is being held, The * difficulty of the police effecting bloodless dispersals was. greatly enhanced owing to a report circulated that the Governor had issued instructions that there was tocbe no firing in any circumstances whatever.
