THE COAL PROBLEM.
CONFERENCE MET YESTERDAY‘
PRELIMINARY STEPS TAKEN.
WELLINGTON, This Day.
The Coal Conference, yesterday afternoon, met under Mr Massey‘s chairman-s-hip. Committees were set up to deal with the different aspects _of questions at issue. The Conference then adjourned till to-day. It is understood that when the Conference met the coalowners broached the question of -the contract system, desiring to clear the ground as soon as possible by discussion, but the miners strongly opposed the contract and prefer the wages system. It is believed further representatives on both sides may be present to—day. ‘
