Someone made a glaring niistane ir‘ a] Chinese store in Sydney the other‘ day, and as a result, the Customs, searchers secured £BOO xx orth of‘ opium. In a s-üburb a Ch.inese grocer received severahrbags of sugar from a Chinese store in the city. One of t'hese bags were sold to a favoured! customer by the grocer. On opening it, however, the customer found that] t'he bag did not contain all sugar. Some of the space was “taken up by] queer-looking 'saus_age-like affairs. Asthe customer had ordered sugar he‘ considered himself badly done by, so he had the offending hag sent. back} and lodged a coniplaint with the gro-‘ -cer. The grocer. on his part, decided; he had received short weight and: gave information to the police. The} Customs searchers were comnlunicat—l; ed. with and an investigation of the? supposed saus'ages showed that the} sausage skins were hut. envelopes of opium. There were 101bs of it aitogether. As the durg is now well worth iover £4O :1 pound, some one was a heavy loser. The Customs activities did not finish at this stage. The spamhm-s want To the Chinese store from which the “sllgar” had been sent, and there made a systematic search. Their efforts were rewarded with raliother ]olbs of opium, this time» done up in half pound tins. The Customs searchers are continuing their investigations. .
