I Frederick John Needham, manager ;of the shipping department of the New Zealand‘ Refrigerating Company, and Claude Smellie, shipping clerk in the employ of the same company, appeared before Mr McCarthy at the Ly-ttelton Courthouse this morning on a charge that they did by negligent act, to wit by loaftling on board the steamer Tainui at Lyttelton certain benzine in leaking receptacles, and improperly stowed, endanger the safety of the said‘ ship contrary to the regulations made under the War Regulations Act. Frederiick Wm. Patridge, niaiiagcar of the Vacuum Oil Company, at Christchurch, was cTi'l‘aTge«d that he did by negligent act procure the loading on boar6.' the"-Tainui at Lyitelton of leaking receptacles and improperly stowed same, thus endangering the safety of the ”‘s’n‘fp. The charges We're made by‘ the Marine Department. Defendants asked that the case be remanded, and Captain Marciel, Government Marine Superintendent at Lyttelton, stated that the Department made no objections to the granting of a remand.
