FEDERATION OF INDUSTRIES.
REPORT OF ‘AUCKLAND SCHEME.
With a. \‘l€‘W of formulating a central labour office for the trade unions of .-‘ruckland a sub-committee has been set up and now submits a. report. on the scheme. It is the opinion of the committee that the recommendations contained in their report, if acted upon, the industrial and financial basis of trade unionism will be materially strengthened. They find, under the present system, that little or no organising is done, and a considerable amount of unnecessary e“xpense is incurred by overlapping of secre-tarial wages,» ofiice rents, and other ofiice expenses genei-ally_ They estimate that the lowestiffossible cost of ad. ministering trade union affairs (as shown by the table at the end of the report) in Auckland is, in round fig‘ares £7OOO, with no provision for organising work at all. The estimated cost of the secretarial and office work_ under the suggested central office, with an efficient oflice stafl and also eight organisers continuously on the field. will cost about. £3OOO. It is estimated that tlfsv" would mean a‘ pay-_ ment of 28 pér member per week’, the balance (nanfelv, 4d pefweek) be” placed to the ciedit of each 'u‘ii_‘ion.‘”
