COST OF GROWING WHEAT.
Figures «on the cost of pl.oduclion' of Wheat on the farm \ve.v'e s.ubm;lt}u(l to me a.t the conference (stated the Prime Minister on Saturday). I was informed, by means of sets of figures from two sources, both of them \;'orked out in detail, that the cost to the farmer of growing wheat was £3O per I acre. I was also given to understand‘ that the average crop of wheat was! }about 30 bushels to the acre-. At these prices the profit to the farmer in view of the risk he takes of bad seasons, is not. extravagant. One of the tirlfrlculties we have to meet in asking the farmer to grow wheat is that. most farmers have all their land suitable for wheat growing laid dO\Vllig in good grass, for -it is not possible to grow wheat except on good’ land. Most practical men are naturally not willing to break up good grass land This difficulty is a serious one.” v E
