I THE IRISH cmzsns.

LORD FRENCH CONVERTED TO HOME RULE.

LONDON, Jan}. 20

l The “Pal'lMall Gazette's" Dublin correspondent announces‘ that Viscount French has been converted to Home Rule. He has become convinced %that the only method of -lealiujg with Ireland is conceding the fullest measure of autonomy consistent with Imperial supremacy. Viscount French recognises that there are only two courses possible—~either military rule or self-government. He has become convinced of the futility of the ‘r'ormer The correspondent adds: that these statements are made by a high authority associated with Irish adminis’rr~:l— He asserts that Viscount Fren<-.ll‘ favours a more compreliensive mea—sure than Mr Lloyd George’s, and that! the latter-ls propasals, when embo-.~nea in the bill, will be found more com-] preliensive than already indicated. |

Tho- correspondent proceeds to deal wiith HlO Irish municipal elections, emphasising the supreinney gained by the Sinn Fein, which i.s now the party in power. He -adds that any Irish settlement must be arranged with the Sinn~ Fcin. The con-espoundent under—stands that one of the first actions of the‘ Sinn Fein majority on the Dublin corporation will be to repudiate the authority of the local government board in connection with municipal administratxion.

SIN'N FEIN ARMY,

TALKS OF A RISING.

LONDON, J:ul_ 19‘

The Dublin uo_rl'c'svpondr:.nt -of the Daily Mail says that the main sftrcngth of the Sinn Fein army, Comprising 150,000 men, lies in the South Midlands and the West. It is not trained nor equipped even for guerilla wai-fa.re_ Nevertheless the ‘org*anisa~ tion contompla-tes a rising ofi"a scale far larger than that of 1918, and the lreaderg think ‘American support is possible. ‘

The Sinn Fein Cabinet often meets. The Government has been ‘hunting seviwal members of this Cabinet for two years Without sucee-sis, though they have seldom moved outside a.ra.dius of two miles from the cast-le. The Sinn Fein szzcre-1; agents have lbeen bringing information of every impending move, but the Govern-ment. has never anticipated a Sinn Fein coup. No Sinn Feiinyer has ever turned informer, although promised valuable rewards and special protecti-on anywhere in the Empire. In the gll.‘a.t battle which is proceeding, Irisrhnien are not showing to any disadvantage.

The Govei-nm.en4; has .=:,3a2‘chc:d vainly fol-’the- Sinn Fein republican bombing and explosive schools of instruction, even military aeroplanes fai-ling to discover a trace. Two Amwrieansx on one occasion dined with Lord French at the V-ice--Regal Lodge. VVhon they returned to their hotel they received a mysterious caller, who eloquently stated the case for the Sinn Fein. He was a leadier for whom the police hot: been seeking for two years. After the initerview ‘-he vanished as mysteriously as« -tug came.
