FIRST MEETING IN PARIS.

AN IMPRESSIVE AFFAIR.

T'he- inaugural meeting of the League of Nations Council took place "in th<.e- cloak room at the Quai Dl’Orsay, Paris, and was of a ;s~3urious, ‘(businesslike character. M. Bourgcoise acted as chail-man, having on his right Lord Curzon, Matsui Dacunha, (Brazil) and Venezelos, and on -his left“l'ep~l'esentatives. of Italy, Belgium and Spain. Viscount Grey was present. Mr Lloyd George put in an appearance later, but left after consultation with. Viscount Grey.

On a. motion o.f M. Bourgeoise, Sir Eric Dl-ummond was: formally installed as general sec«retal-y. The meeting also unanimously elected M. Bourgeoise first chairman.

The inaugural speech of M. Bourgeoise was a fine exposition of the aims of the League.
