SUGAR SHORTAGE AND JAM.
It is foamed that in consequence of the sugar seareirty the -price for jam will rise to prohibitive rates. The Christchurch Sun has been. informed? that of a Shipment of 150 tons of 'l:ugar arriving in Ch‘ris:tchurch only about 40 tons W.cre devoted to -household consumption, the remainder nbeing utilised for industrial purposes,‘ principally in connection With breweries and confectionery works. Grocers interviewed alleged that =hou'sewiVe{ were using all manner of despicable meensv in order to obtain sugar, and clertainly Were not stopping at telling untruths. Pe-0-“~ ple connected with the fruit business spoke of the glut on the market of small fruit caused by the lack of ivugar sugar for jam-making purpostes, and said apricots, peaches and other large fruits, would also be affected if mat-4 tors were not improved. Black cul'-1-ants were Belling at as low as per lb, and pcachse were from 25 to‘. '3O per cunt. lower than they were at: this time last year. One gontlenum: asked why we could not grow beet: sugar in this country. The conditions were far more suitable for its culture: in New Zoaland than in Germany and France, wlle~n~.3 it wzils grown considerably.
