AUSTRALIAN MARINE STRIKE.

SYDNEY, Jan. 24. A conference of shipowners with, the marine engineers, with a view to a settlement of the engineers’ strike, proved futile. The Shipping Controller informed Mr Hughes that the engineers declined to compromise on their original demand. Mr Hughes then spent two hours in a talk with members of the executive, but bis efforts to reach an agreement failed. The representatives leave for their homes tonight and the strike continues.
