PAINTED FACES.
AND MODERN JEZEBELS. \VRITER ON AUSTRALIAN WOMEN. SYDNEY, Dec. ..1. A writer in one of the Melbourne Ipapers, speaking about the painted faces: and rouged lips of '.-.\ustr;i_liall women, declares that scores of Melbourne women "are lineal descendants of Jezebel. A famous artist once advised liusbands to castignte their wives if they painted their faces. if the advice were followed the gl-eat bulk of the women of Melbourne and Sydny, to name only two o-f the States, would be under the lash. ’l‘o paint. their fa.ce.~' is something oi? a fetish with Australian women. Many of them do not even do it artistically. At close range it sometimes looks as though it had been applied with the slap dash ferocity of the man who paints a house fence. And they do it ——fiappers'and mothers alike. It is no uncommon thing in Sydney, either, to szxe women smoking cigarettes in pub lic places. “Some Australiaun women,” said the Melbourne writer, “Seem likely to bring upon all Australian xyomen the reputation of being painted dolls‘. .. . On Melboui-ne’:s most fashionabie parade: there are faces to which paint seems to have been applid: with" a. thumbnail or a trowel; there‘ are f'fi_c‘/s’ which create the illl}_)l‘(‘f.S.SiOll that the owners are members of some pierrot troupe who have come into ‘ town hurriedly. having forgotten to wash their paint and powder off.
